Summary of term 1

It was a tough semester with a lot to do every week with some challenging projects and live projects, but I enjoyed designing them all and I learned alot! I especially enjoyed doing the 3 live projects: iPhone Cover design, Spar Reusable Bag design and the All-Ireland Scholarships poster design. Winning one of them made it very interesting and boosted up my confidence in my work. I'm hoping it won't be the only project I'm successful in.

All Ireland Scholarship

It took a few days to finish this poster about the All Ireland Scholarships, but I enjoyed making it.
I originally drew this tree for my illustrator project (magazine cover) and I wanted to use it here because I came up with the idea of making Ireland look like the top of a tree and the counties as leaves on this tree.
The font used on for the county names of the leaves is Celtic because I wanted to add an Irish touch to the fonts used in my poster. And thankfully I found a few lovely Irish fonts, but this suited the leaves more.

I wanted to add all the information relevant for the Scholarships but didn't want to put in a lot of writing, so people can get all the info they need in just a few seconds, and those who want more information can find it in the website URL that I added on the bottom of the poster.

I used the color scheme from the All Ireland Scholarships website, because I believe that one color scheme should be used in all its designs and I added their logo that I found in their website.

Brief 9: A4 Advertisement Layout

Target audience: Women
Magazines to appear in: Women's Health, Easy Health, Cosmopolitan and Glamour
This ad can appear in any women's magazine.

I wanted to create a new product that doesn't exist, because all the hair loss products I saw look like medication and what I wanted to create is a product that looks like a normal shampoo and that would be acceptable and not create sensitivity.
I found a tutorial online on how to draw a shampoo bottle and that's how I came up with this product. I created the brand name and the website is not real, but added it on the ad because when looking at ads about such products, some people would like to go get more information about it before buying it.

Brief 7: Corporate Identity 2

At first I tried out the european flag colors for the Playwell logo because its a European manufacturer, but it didn't look like a logo for toys manufacturer, so I thought to use more colors to make it look like it's for toys.

Brief 6: Corporate Identity 1

As soon as I saw the name Bagel Bite the image of a bitten bagel came to my mind, and that's what I chose to do as my logo design. Little did I know that a lot of the other students had this idea as well.
The bagel was easy to draw but the 3D part was complicated.

Brief 5: Spar Bag Design

Summary of Design: Theme: Spar Paisley
A paisley is a popular design that was used to decorate royal regalia, crowns, and court garments. It is usually woven on high quality textiles for gifts.
I used the paisley because it’s a lovely design, it gives beauty and represents good quality, and Spar is all about good quality.
I used the spar colors to design the paisley and added the spar logo inside the paisley to give it uniqueness and specify it to Spar.

Brief 4: iPhone Cover Design

Peacock iPhone Cover

I started by drawing flowers and curls, but when I saw a picture of a peacock on a card, I thought to draw the same peacock and make it my iPhone cover design. I used the pen tool in Illustrator to draw the peacock. It took me a very long time to draw the peacock with all its small details. For the colors, I was planning to make the peacock silver and make the background in a turquoise/purple gradiant. As I was filling in the background with the gradiant, I accidently colored the peacock instead and loved the way it looked, so I continued on coloring its' details using similar colors as the gradiant but using it in different ways

After I finished with the turquoise/purple peacock, I copied it and reflected it vertically, then changed the colors of the gradiants. I also tried it with the black background and it looked very nice.

Brief 3: Poetry in Motion

In this assignment, we had to choose a poem or quote and give interpretive visual expression using
only type. I came upon a few quotes and poems, but the one that intrigued me the most was this "If wishes were fishes, we'd all cast nets". First of all because it's one of my wishes that a wish is caught rather than waiting for it to come true... I don't like waiting :) Second of all, as soon as I read the quote, an image came to my mind of wishes swimming around and lots of nets trying to catch them.

Using Illustrator, I started by drawing a fish, then putting the word wishes into it, then making them in different sizes, as in big wishes and smal wishes. For the nets, I used the type on a path tool and the quote's words to draw them, then copied and scaled a few (top right) to make them seem far.

Brief 1: Shaping an Object using Typography

In this exercise we had to choose an object and shape it using words; typography.
At first, I chose the Apple logo, but since we had to choose an object, I changed my choice from the Apple logo to an apple. In addition to being a tasty and juicy fruit, an apple is a popular fruit in religions, myths, fairytales and so on. I started by looking for a nice apple picture and outlining it using the pen tool in Illustrator. Since I wanted it to look 3D or somethings close to 3D, I drew curved lines inside the apple and used the Type on a path tool to insert the text on the outline around the apple and the curved lines. I added text that I found on Wikepedia about apples in religions and myths. At the end, I added the apple wick on top and inserted the word "Apple".
